Hasbro, Inc., a global play and entertainment leader, and The New York Times Games are working together to bring Wordle to life in a new board game called “Wordle: The Party Game.” For the unversed, the “original” Wordle game was created by former Reddit software engineer Josh Wardle for himself and his partner to play before eventually making it public in October 2021. The game gained a large amount of popularity in December 2021 after Wardle added the ability for players to copy their daily results as emoji squares, which were widely shared on Twitter. In January 2022, the game was purchased by The New York Times Company for an undisclosed seven-figure sum with plans to keep it free for all players. It was later moved to the company’s website in February 2022. “Since Wordle burst onto the scene, it’s undoubtedly been a staple in social and pop culture vocabulary,” said Adam Biehl, SVP & General Manager, Hasbro Gaming. “We’re beyond thrilled to work with New York Times Games to bring our gaming worlds together and extend Wordle in new ways.” Jonathan Knight, Head of Games for The New York Times, said: “Wordle truly brought us all together and that’s what makes it so special. With each daily puzzle, we’re connected with friends and family through social play. At New York Times Games, we’re focused on quality crafted puzzles that everyone can experience together, which is why we’re so excited to team up with Hasbro to bring a fresh new format to the global sensation of Wordle.”
— Hasbro Pulse (@HasbroPulse) July 14, 2022 So, how does one play the Wordle: The Party Game? In each round, a player designated as the Wordle Host will write down a Secret Word. Just like the original Wordle game, all players will get six attempts to guess a five letter word. After each guess, the letters are either marked as green, yellow, or gray by the Wordle Host; green means that the letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means that the letter is in the answer but not in the right position, and gray means the letter is not in the answer at all. Since the players are competing against each other in this game, the fewer attempts a player needs to guess the word, the fewer points they score. At the end of the game, the player with the fewest points wins! You can play Wordle: The Party Game repeatedly with the included dry-erase markers or small-dry Wordle erase boards. Players can also change up the gameplay with four different methods to Wordle: classic play, fast, timed, or teams. Wordle: The Party Game is now available for pre-order at www.wordlethepartygame.com for $19.99. The game will start shipping in North America approximately on October 1, 2022, which is an estimated date that’s subject to change.
